Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
